Biography:

After qualification from the Welsh National School of Medicine in 1983, Mr Austin's initial training was in University Hospital of Wales and the Accident and Emergency Department of Cardiff Royal Infirmary. After appointments in the Mersey Regional Neurosciences Centre, Liverpool and General Medicine in Macclesfield his specialist training in ophthalmology took him to St. Paul's Eye Hospital, Liverpool, Aberdeen Royal Infirmary and University Hospital, Nottingham. His sub-specialist training in glaucoma was as a research fellow at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital and as a senior registrar at the Queen's Medical Centre, Nottingham. 

Mr Austin has been a consultant ophthalmologist in Swansea since 1995 where his main clinical interests have been in the further development of the local glaucoma services and undertaking his share of the general ophthalmic workload, including much cataract surgery. His other main interest is in medical education. He is a senior clinical tutor with School of Medicine, Swansea University and has set up teaching in basic sciences and clinical ophthalmology for undergraduate medical students of Swansea and Cardiff Universities. His research interests have concentrated on the diagnosis and management of glaucoma, with an emphasis on early diagnosis.
