Biography:
Dr IMS Sawhney graduated from Christian Medical College, Panjab, India in
1975 and obtained postgraduate degree in Medicine (MD) in 1979. He was trained
in Neurology at the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research,
Chandigarh, India and received the degree of DM in the speciality of Neurology
from the same institute in 1983. He was awarded Commonwealth fellowship for
training in Epilepsy and EEG for a year in Maudsley and King's College
Hospital in 1992-93. He was given full registration by the General Medical
Council in 1997 and was placed on the Specialist Register for Neurology in
1998.
He was appointed as a Lecturer (Consultant) in Neurology in 1984 in the
Postgraduate Institute of Medical Ediucation and Research, Chandigarh, India.
He was promoted to the post of Assistant Professor in 1986. He rose to the
position of Additional Professor in 1990 and held this position until
September 1998 before the appointment of Consultant in Neurology in Morriston
Hospital, Swansea, UK. At present, he is Programme Director for Neurology in
Wales. He is actively involved in the care of Neurology patients. His special
area if interest is Epilepsy and runs the Epilepsy Clinics in Morriston and
Bridgend.
He was involved in the organisation of XIVth World
Congress of Neurology, New Dehli, India, 1989 and worked in the capacity of
Assistant Secretary and member of the Scientific Committee. He was Joint
Secretary of the 1st International Conference on Organisation and Delivery of
Neurological Sciences, New Dehli, India, 1994 and was Secretary of Epilepsy
Subsection, Indian Academy of Neurology. He has been an examiner for MD
(Medicine) and DM (Neurology) in India and MD (Paediatrics), University of
Cape Town, South Africa. He has been appointed Senior Clinical Teacher in
Neurology, University of Wales, Cardiff. He served as Associate Editor of Neurology India, the
official journal of Neurology Society of India. He is Assistant Editor of World
Neurology, a publication of the World Federation of Neurology.
He is a member of British Neurologists, British Medical Association,
Medical Defence Union and South West England Neurologists Association. He has
been appointmed member of the Research Group - Tropical Neurology, World
Federation of Neurology. He has been made Fellow of Royal College of
Physicians in 2005. He is Fellow of the Indian Academy of Neirology, member
National Academy of Medical Sciences, life member Neurological Society of
India.
His major areas of interest are Epilepsy and Tropical Neurology. He is
involved in the clinical drug trials for Epilepsy. He has co-edited 8 books,
published 83 papers and contributed 21 chapters to books. He has guided 10
theses: DM Neurology (1), Ph.D (1), M.Sc (2) and MD Medicine
(6).
