Biography:

As a Consultant Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon at the Welsh Centre for Burns and Plastic Surgery, Mr Laing is based in Swansea serving a population of 2.3M in South Wales. He also has honorary NHS Consultant appointments in Cardiff & Vale and Gwent Healthcare NHS Trusts. Prior to his consultant appointment in 1998, he was a senior trainee in South Wales having trained in plastic surgery in and around London.

Qualifying as a doctor from King's College Hospital, London in 1984, he gained experience in a variety of surgical units including the Royal Marsden Cancer Hospital and Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children as a preliminary to specialising in Plastic and Reconstructive surgery. He was awarded a first class BSc. in Physiology, the University physiology prize and MB BS from University of London. He is a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England and holds the intercollegiate FRCS examination in Plastic Surgery (FRCS [Plast.]).

His surgical sub-speciality interests include skin cancer, soft tissue sarcoma (a rare group of cancers for which he is clinical lead in the cancer network) and also hand surgery. His private practice encompasses these conditions as the common cosmetic surgery procedures: breast enlargement, reduction and lifting ("mastopexy"), liposuction, abdominoplasty ("tummy tuck"), rhinoplasty, eyelid surgery and the removal of non-cancerous skin lesions.

He is Deputy Medical Director at Swansea NHS Trust, an advisor to Health Commission Wales for Plastic Surgery, represented the Welsh Assembly Government at the NHS Modernisation Agency and is Honorary Secretary of the British Association of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons (BAPRAS), the official body representing Plastic Surgery in the UK.

He is a full member of BAPRAS and the British Society for the Surgery of the Hand (BSSH) and also belongs to the British Melanoma Study Group, the British Sarcoma Group and the British Burns Association. He is on the specialist register of the General Medical Council for Plastic Surgery.

Mr Laing also provides a medico-legal practice for both personal injury and medical negligence case work.
