Chemical Peels

What is a chemical peel?

A chemical peel is a non-surgical cosmetic procedure, designed to resurface the dead layer of skin cells, resulting in a softer, smoother appearance. There is a range of chemical peels available to treat different skin problems – sun damage, fine lines, wrinkles, uneven skin tones, acne and scarring.

It is important that your skin is assessed by an experienced medical practitioner, who can advise you on the best course of treatment for you. The chemical peels we use at Sancta Maria can be customised and tailored for each individual. Chemical peels are sometimes used in conjunction with other cosmetic treatments in order to optimise the results. They are not designed to eradicate lines and wrinkles, but your skin will appear revitalised, smoother and more evenly toned.

What are the different types of chemical peel?

The range of chemical peels we use consist of Trichloroacetic Acid, Lactic Acid, Salicylic Acid and Ascorbic Acid. Each is available in varying concentrations. They are designed to treat specific skin problems. Sometimes, a patient may have a combination of problems. After obtaining a detailed medical history and undertaking a thorough assessment of your skin, our Consultants will devise a course of treatment to suit each individual.

Will I need time off work?

The chemical peels we use at Sancta Maria are only available on prescription from Cosmetic Doctors, Plastic Surgeons and Dermatologists. However, there is no down-time required after these treatments.  Most patients experience very little, if any redness on the evening of the treatment. It is common to experience mild dryness and flaking of the skin a few days after the peel, which is easily remedied with the application of a little moisturiser.

How many peels will I need?

Although it is possible to provide a single peel, the best results are achieved by undergoing a course of 3-6 peels, approximately one month apart. The number needed will depend on the condition of your skin. It is also important to prepare the skin by using our prescription-only Skin Refining Serum before commencing treatment. This encourages gentle exfoliation of the skin, resulting in more effective and predictable results from the chemical peel treatment

The results of the chemical peel can be prolonged by the use of Skin Refining Serum or a Micropeel (a very mild version of chemical peel, safe for weekly home use).

Your doctor or nurse will be happy to discuss any other questions you may have which are not covered in this website.
